newly constituted governing council of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech)
began work at the College Council Chamber on May 6, 2013.
Inaugurated
by the Federal Government, April 30, 2013, the Council set to work in the
College promptly, meeting with the College Principal Officers, Deans of Schools

Government for its timely constitution of the Board. More than before, she said
the council will set purposeful direction for the general management of the
affairs of the College. She
noted that the management anticipates the assistance of the Governing Council
in the fulfillment of the Federal Government transformation agenda which the
Ministry of Education had keyed into.
Ladipo
urged the Council, which is made up of very experienced and versatile leaders
with eminent personalities to support, partner and lead the Management to the
attainment of the College vision. “Our Vision is to become the leading higher
institution in Nigeria by providing first grade academic, professional and
entrepreneur education for the purpose of making a positive impact in the
technological and social economic development in Nigeria.
The
Chairman of the Council, Chief Ebenezer Babatope (OFR) in his response
appreciated the College Management for what they termed ‘radical militant
transformation’ having visited the College 23 years ago.
Babatope
said the Council members will not diminish on the good work that had started
and will not lower the standards of the College in any way.
He
assured the management of a friendly atmosphere. “We will constitute ourselves

I
urge you to make the best use of the golden opportunity presented by your

The

The oath of allegiance, which you have just sworn to commits you to be
of exemplary behaviour throughout your stay in this college, shunning all forms
of anti-social behavior such as examination misconduct, cult activities and
other unruly behaviour. You must at all

You will all be introduced to various

In line with the Federal Government
direction and our resolve at improving access to education, we have made
concerted effort to improve our carrying capacity through the construction of
more structures that will provide additional sitting space for our students. One
of the structures is a lecture auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,300

is also the 500 lecture theatre project which is being upgraded to a 3-storey
building. By the time these projects are
completed we will be able to further provide comfortable classroom, studio and
laboratory accommodation for our student.

There
are a few important points that I wish to highlight on this occasion. We may describe these as core values of this
academic community.
1. Discipline
in Academics
It
is imperative that we recognize that the primary purpose of your enrolment in
this college is to acquire high quality education. Therefore, you must aim at academic and
professional excellence in your respective disciplines. To achieve this, you should dedicate
yourselves to consistent study, regular attendance at lectures, practical
classes and tutorials; as well as optimum use of the library and other learning
facilities.
2. Discipline
in Appearance and Behaviour
All
students are required to obey all college rules and regulations, dress properly
and demonstrate exemplary behavior at all times. On no account should any student or group of
students take the law into their hands. There are laid down procedures and
effective channels of communication for taking care of your grievances through
your elected Students Union officials, the office of the Dean (Student Affairs),
your various Class Advisers, Heads of Department and Deans of School. This college has a high reputation of zero
tolerance for all forms of anti-social behavior and indecent dressing.
To
ensure effective communication and understanding, the Students Union executives
are in constant dialogue with college authorities through the office of the
Dean of Student Affairs. A good number of student representatives have been
co-opted as members of relevant management and academic board committees such
as Students Disciplinary Committee, Sports Committee, Welfare Committee,
Environmental Sanitation and Beautification Committee and the Campus Security
Committee. There is a functional SERVICOM
office ready to receive your complaints and observations on the quality of
teaching and other services that you receive.
3. 75%
Class Attendance
In
Yaba College of Technology, academic regulation provides that students must
attend 75% of lectures in order to qualify to write examinations at the end of
the semester. I therefore want to use
this opportunity to caution new students against the notion that attendance at
lectures is not essential.
[4. Entrepreneurial Orientation
The
college has some compulsory courses which must be taken by all students
throughout their stay in the college.
One
of these is entrepreneurial studies which trains you from your first day in
school on how to be self-reliant. It is expected that by the time you graduate,
you would have acquired the necessary skills to be an entrepreneur and an
employer of labour rather than just another job seeker.
It
is worthy of note that this college is the first higher institution in Nigeria
to establish a full-fledged Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, with
strong linkages with the world of commerce and industry. We are corporate
members of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprise (NASME) and
the Nigerian-South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Another
compulsory course is Information and Communication Technology (ICT) studies
which enables you to be proficient in the use of computer and other ICT tools.
5. Cultism
In
Yaba College of Technology, it is illegal to operate a secret society or belong
to a banned society. Any contravention
of this regulation will lead to expulsion and possible criminal prosecution.
The
college management has taken far reaching measures to curtail the menace of
cultism; because of this, our campus is free and safe from the menace. We
intend to keep it so. I advise all
students to shun these vices. I will
also use this opportunity to advise the parents to counsel their children to be
of good behavior throughout their stay in the college.
6. Ban
on Sale and Use of Alcohol on Campus
There
is a ban on sale of alcohol on campus and use of alcohol or any intoxicating
substance by students on campus.
I
want to emphasise that this ban still exists and any student caught using
alcohol will be summarily dealt with.
7. Societies
and Social Clubs
There
are different types of societies which you are encouraged to join in Yaba
College of Technology. Some of these
societies include: Departmental
Associations, State Associations and Socio Cultural Associations. Please ensure that the society you join is
registered with the student affairs unit.
8. Religious
Tolerance
Yaba
College of Technology encourages freedom of worship and association in
religious activities. Christians and
Muslim live together in harmony. There
is a Christian place for worship and a mosque for Muslim worship. To foster harmonious co-existence, students
are advised to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations pertaining to the
use of the college premises for religious worship.
9. Sports
and Leisure
The
college has made great strides in the area of sports and can confidently pride
itself as an Institution with one of the best sporting facilities in the
country. I urge you to make the best use
of these facilities. Eminent sportsmen and sportswomen have been produced by
the college.
The
college has also won not less than 5 out of the 14 past editions of the
Nigerian Polytechnic Games.
10. Internal
Quality Assurance
There
is aninternal quality assurance unit in the college which aims at bringing the
concept of quality control and assurance in academic service delivery to the
consciousness of both staff and students.
The unit ensures that every aspect of academic activity is measured to standards
comparable to the best in the world.
11. Applied
Research and Technology Innovation (ARTI)
The
Applied Research and Technology Innovation Unit (ARTI) is a unit in the College
established to promote research and linkages with relevant private sector organizations, particularly
macro, small and medium enterprises for the exploitation and use of research
for development.
The
unit also assists to promote linkages between our students and students of
other institutions especially in the areas of research.
12. Academic
Planning Unit
The
Academic Planning Unit is pivotal to the development of academic programmes in
Yaba College of Technology. The Unit was
set up in line with management decision to reposition academic activities in
the college.
13. Epe
Campus
Yaba
College of Technology has a second campus at Epe. The Department of Agricultural Technology
which is admitting its third batch of students is presently operating from Epe
campus. The Michael Otedola Information
and Communication Centreisalso located at the Epe campus. Others such as Marine
Engineering will soon start operating from Epe Campus.
CONCLUSION
I
congratulate the new students on their admission into the Yabatech family, and
I appeal to you to remain focused and make a success of your stay in the
college. I see all of you as my children
and future leaders. I hope you will make
good progress in your studies by being focused, prayerful and hardworking and
in two years’ time, at your graduation ceremony, we will be able to remember
today’s occasion with nostalgia. To the
returning students, I welcome you back to the college. I hope we shall continue to work together in
harmony as we did in the last session so that this session can also be a
hitch-free session.
I also congratulate the
parents and guardians of the matriculating students. I pray that these students would remain
sources of joy and pride to you always and I pray that by God’s grace they will
all excel and not be distracted.
Thank
you all and God bless.

Protocols
On
behalf of the management, staff and students, I welcome you (Ag. Executive Secretary
Mr. Jolomi Areyenenka) to this auspicious occasion of the commissioning of PTDF
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre here in Yaba College of
Technology, the cradle of higher learning in Nigeria.
The
journey to this commissioning began in July 2009 when the Petroleum Technology
Development Fund (PTDF) selected Yaba College of Technology as one of the
beneficiaries of the second phase PTDF ICT intervention project for institutions.
The
college reacted positively to the magnanimous offer by providing a parcel of
land for the development of the project.
The project which effectively commenced on February 8, 2010 was awarded
to Messrs Hasting Global Service with an agreed completion period of 6
months.
The
PTDF/ICT Centre is a 100 seater building equipped with Computer Work Stations,
a Server Room, Independent Power Supply (50KVA Generator), VSAT and Air Conditioning
facilities.
The
college is indeed delighted to be a beneficiary. It is my sincere hope therefore that the
commissioning of this project will herald the beginning of further
collaboration between Yaba College of Technology and Petroleum Technology
Development Fund.
Today,
the centre has become a hub for students’ registration and the teaching of
computer courses for staff and students.
I assure you that the college will continue to make good use of
facilities at the centre to add value to
the community.
Finally,
I once again thank the Petroleum Technology Development Fund for the support demonstrated
by this noble gesture.

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMETAL STUDENTS GET AWARD
|
SCHOOL OF
ENVIRONMETAL STUDENTS GET AWARD
The Managing
Director, Win Development Limited, Mr Idowu Raheem has promised to give an
award to best students in each department from the School of Environmental
Studies with effect from the 2011/2012 academic session.
This was made known
at the commissioning of Architectural studio and the School library.
Raheem, who sponsored
the library said the five years renewable award is to create healthy rivalry
among students and to reward hard work.
The Yaba College of
Technology alumnus said a library makes an institution as well as her students
relevant and recent in a changing world. He noted the dwindling proficiency of
graduates which he adduced to outdated curriculum, lecturers’ goals diversion
and most importantly are students’ distraction and insincere government
funding.
The Rector, Dr.
Margaret Ladipo who was overwhelmed that an alumnus of the College had attained
a peak in the building industry said the provision of a School library stocked
with current books will aids acquisition of relevant skill in a technology
environment which will go a long way to boost reading culture amongst students.
She equally appreciated Nigerite Limited for building an airconditioned studio.
The Dean, School of
Environmental Studies, Mr Inyang-Udo said the branded studio meets the
universal accepted standard; therefore, he implored staff and students of the
departments to ensure its maintenance. He hinted that the School of
Environmental Studies Professional Advisory Board (SESPAB) also donated volumes
of books to the School library.
Ladipo commended the
proactiveness of the Dean and Head, Department of Architecture, Arch. Adenekan
to reach out to the industry for the need of the School and charged other
members of staff to love the system and “see your position as a challenge to
greater height.”

UCLAN STAFF LECTURES YABATECH STUDENTS
The University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) has fulfil one of its memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Yaba College of Technology through a student/lecturer Exchange visit recently.
The Lecturer, Ann Vanner came with three students, lee Sansfield, Chris Dalton and Johnny Young from the Departments of Quantity Survey, Architectural Design and Building Technology respectively.
The Dean, School of Environmental Studies, Mr. Inyang-Udoh Uduak said the purpose of the MOU is to create career progression for graduates of the school to do a year top-up degree programmes. Others are to establish staff/student exchange programme through lectures and exchange of research ideas.
Inyang-Udoh said this is the first lecture that would be delivered by UCLAN staff however; the MOU had afforded members of staff to develop themselves through P.hD programme which about five staffs are currently running in the institution.
Vanner lectures on ‘The Role of Architectural Technologist’ and ’15 Universal Design Principles’ pooled students from the five departments in the School of Environmental Studies.
A bridge building competition was organised. This encouraged team work and gave the UCLAN and Yabatech students the opportunity to design a bridge that would span 60cm using paper and cenotap. 'Read more' |

Yabatech, Rector Bag Kwame Nkrumah 2012 Leadership Award
|
Yabatech,
Rector Bag Kwame Nkrumah 2012 Leadership Award
Yaba
College of Technology and Rector of the institution, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo have
bagged the 2012 Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award.
The
College was given the award on the platform of being an outstanding institution
in Africa while the Rector was recognised and inducted into the hall of fame of
distinguished leaders in Africa by the All Africa Students’ Union (AASU) with
her base in Ghana.
The
Secretary-General of AASU, Comrade Kounedji Hermann from Gambia, in his address
said that the College and the Rector were awarded the 2012 Kwame Nkrumah Awards
after holistically taken cognisance of their past and present achievements as a
strong advocate of youth empowerment, grassroot development, educational
development and egalitarianism which they have commitment over the years.
The
awards, he stated further, denoted creativity, enterprise and exceptionality
that made it a monumental honour of dignity and outstanding commitments,
dedication and inspirational leadership demonstrated by the Rector and Yaba
College of Technology in the training of young men and women as future leaders.
The
Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award series, he said, was initiated by AASU in 12
years ago and had featured prominent leaders of thought as recipients across
the African Continent over the years who have distinguished themselves in their
various fields of endeavours as individuals, institutions and corporate
concerns of African origin.
Kounedji
declared that AASU is the Continental Representative organisation of democratic
students’ Union founded in 1972 at University of Science and Technology,
Kumasi, Ghana, with 54 unions from Francophone and Anglophone African
countries.
He
said that AASU is affiliated to the international Union of Students (IUS), has
a consultative status of UNESCO, ECOSOC, UNICEF, ECOWAS and accredited with
UNCD and enjoying a cordial working
relationship with the UN system.
The
Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Margaret Ladipo, in her response after
receiving the award said that for a credible assessment of chief executives in
institutions of learning performances, ‘all you need to do is to listen to the
students. If you are getting it right they will tell you and if you are getting
it wrong they will tell you.’
Students,
Dr Ladipo said, are indeed the strong parameter in performance assessment for
any institutional growth and development.
According
to her, ‘it is gratifying to note that African students can converge and
institute a formidable body such as AASU for the common good of African
Continent and ultimate emancipation of the black race .This is a confirmation
of the fact that we have what it takes to make the African continent distinct.’
Dr.
Ladipo said that the Award is a reward for hardwork and an award that the
College cherish dearly but came with a challenge that ‘we have to work even
harder to continue to justify the confidence repose in us’. Signed
P.R.O

CED, pre-requisite for accreditation
|
CED, pre-requisite for accreditation
The establishment of a Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) will be a pre-requisite for accreditation of programmes in polytechnics and similar tertiary institutions in Nigeria with effect from 2012 accreditation.
The Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE) Dr. M.A Kazaure announced at the just concluded two-day workshop held at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).
The Executive Secretary represented by NBTE Director of Programmes, Mr. Joseph Aboi in a paper titled “Vibrant Entrepreneurship Development Centre: A Mandatory Requirement for Accreditation of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma Programmes in Polytechnics and Similar Institutions” said the requirement was a sine que non for accreditation.
Kazaure noted the criticism against the quality of the nation’s graduates of technical and technological institutions at the Education Summit held in 2012 and other fora centered on the relevance and quality of expertise gained during tutelage.
According to him, the skills acquired by some graduates were inadequate for the jobs they were trained for. The Board found that tools and equipment used in practicals were either not functioning or obsolete and where practicals are in place, workdone are not in line with current industry needs.
In addition, students’ attitudes to practicals are not favourable to industry demands because of the wrong value system which places academic qualification above skill acquisition, which unwittingly result in unemployment.
The Board also discovered that institutions present falsified or doctored reports during accreditation of their programmes.
The Executive Secretary noted that polytechnic graduates will be relevant in the scheme of science, technology and management if they embraced skill acquisition.
The objectives of CED according to the Executive Secretary are to provide institutions with more and relevant facilities for exploratory and life practical to staff and students. Also to afford them the opportunity to observe and learn skills that could guarantee final employment after graduation, and for CED to become an internal industrial setting for teaching and learning how the world of work functions outside the school system.
YABATECH Rector, Dr. Margaret Ladipo in her welcome address said entrepreneurial skill acquisition should not be limited to students, as lecturers could also earn revenue if the course is properly handled. According to her, “The fear of retirement will no longer be there if you are awake to your responsibility.”
At the end of the workshop, NBTE advocated a better tomorrow by introducing appropriate and corrective measures as follow;
. the production of new entrepreneurship curricula that would harmonize its content.
. furthering entrepreneurship education into practical activities.
. making entrepreneurship education a compulsory programme in the polytechnic and monotechnic system.
. introducing the establishment of Entrepreneurship Development Centres in polytechnics and similar tertiary institutions.
. making evidence of entrepreneurship activities as a pre-requisite for accreditation of programmes with effect from the 2012 accreditation exercise.
. ensure that assessment forms reflect the mandatory introduction of vibrant centre for entrepreneurial development.
. introduce more practical contacts with the students to reflect the present realities in Nigeria’s economic development plan.
. encourage positive attitudinal behavior of trained technologies as espoused by SERVICOM.
. the IQA mechanism in the polytechnics should be upgraded and made functional.
. open up the process of curriculum review to involve the industries and other relevant professional concerns to participate in curriculum development and review. Such a symbiotic relationship will afford industries the opportunity to understand and appreciate the problems facing these institutions with a view to rendering possible assistance when and wherever appropriate and/or possible.
. strict compliance with NBTE’s directives that all polytechnics in Nigeria should adhere strictly to the 70/30 percent ratio in favour of Science, Engineering and Environmental based courses, else such an institution would be classified as a Business Centre.
. institutions are also mandated to have a minimum of 10% of GNS courses in their various programmes.
. management and staff should exhibit teamwork and team spirit in the realization of set goals.
. the domestication of entrepreneurial skills should be the concern of all departments in these institutions.
. the Academic Planning units should be populated by professional planners to ensure strict strategic planning and implementation.
. Federal Government should provide funding for establishing and running of Entrepreneurship education programmes and Centres in institutions, and encourage the regulatory bodies such as NAFDAC to support student entrepreneurs in obtaining certification which would enable them patent and commercialize their products and sell to their immediate community.
. institutions should also come up with proposals/projects that will attract grants and funding from funding agencies.
. Chief Executives of institutions should be sensitized on the need to support Entrepreneurship Centres in their various institutions, and ensure that funds are accessible. In addition, they should encourage students patent and commercialise their products as a motivational strategy.
Publicize students’ innovation through media reporting, student project competition, seminars, workshops and community outreach. |

|
LADIPO CALLS FOR MUTUAL
RELATIONSHIP IN INSTITUTIONAL MANAGEMENT
Polytechnics
and Colleges of Technology Registrars have been called upon to be more
innovative and engender a mutual working relationship with their chief
executives.
This
call was made by the Rector, Yaba College of Technology Dr. (Mrs.) Margaret
kudirat Ladipo at the 58th Regular meeting of the Conference of
Registrars of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COREG) held at Yaba College of
Technology, Yaba, Lagos.
In
her keynote address, she charged Polytechnic Registrars to be innovative
especially when it comes to entrenching global best practices for the good of
polytechnic system.
“Therefore I urge you as adviser
to the chief executives of your institution to continue to be more innovative
especially when it comes to entrenching global best practices for the good of
the polytechnic system; Your chief executives needs your support to help them
achieve their mandate, they need loyalty and most time they need to count on
you” She stated.
She
implored the registrars to also have harmonious relationship with the academic
staff in order to achieve the vision of Polytechnic education adding that,
without a smooth and efficient registry there is no way the polytechnic system
can achieve much.
Having
realized the importance of registry in the education management, Ladipo said
the college will continue to empower the registry unit through the provision of
necessary infrastructural facilities, manpower development and computerization
of records.
The
Chairman COREG, Malam Labaran Ibrahim in his address, said that COREG is not a
labour organization or a trade union in the polytechnic system; rather it is an
association of Registrars formed in 1978 to serve as the platform for them to
interact among themselves.
He
also stated that COREG was formed in order to promote and facilitate
cooperation among members and their Rectors in particular.
According
to him “COREG recognize itself as one of
the stakeholders in the tertiary education sector in the country and therefore
strive to contribute its own quota towards the steady growth and development of
the sector.”
He
said further that COREG’S meeting is being rotated among members institution to
pave way for the opportunity to experience the cultural heritage of the state
in which the meeting is being held
The
host Registrar, Biekoroma C. Amapakabo, in her welcome address said Yaba
College of Technology as the first and foremost tertiary institution has proved
her worth by making “Excellence” her watchword.
She
enjoined her fellow registrars to always seek for exposure on issues of
institutional administration outside their routine use of extant regulation
stating that the quality of a Registrar has very serious implication on how the
polytechnic fairs.
Amapkabo
charged them to be well equipped for the discharge of their duty adding that “Capacity development is the key to
successful registrarship”.
Arising
from the meeting, COREG unanimously resolved as followings:
Condemns
in its entirety the prevailing insecurity of lives and property of innocent
citizens in some parts of the country. COREG notes the various efforts of
government on the issue and urges it to take more steps to bring the situation
under control.
Condoles
with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the ill-fated DANA
plane crash and calls on the government to ensure thorough investigation of the
incident, while all airline operators should be made to comply with
international Aviation Safety Rules and Regulations.
Commends
the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the tremendous successes
recorded in the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME) since its introduction and urges the Board to embark on aggressive
enlightenment of candidates on the choice of institutions and the intending
JAMB e-examination.
Appreciates
the proactive role of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) in the
development of infrastructure and human capital in the nation’s tertiary
institutions and reiterates its call on TETFUND to extend its long term
sponsorship of academic training to Non-Teaching Staff of Tertiary
Institutions.
Commends
the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) for the giant strides made in
capacity building in science and technology in the tertiary institutions and
calls on the agency to sustain and consolidate the achievements for the benefit
of all Nigerians.
Urges
National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to expedite action on the review
of the staff manual of the Federal Polytechnics.
Examines the enormous responsibilities of the
Registrar, Bursar, and Polytechnic Liberian as Principal Officers in the
tertiary institutions and considers their current remuneration inadequate and
urges government to address the situation by placing them on enhanced
consolidated salary scale.
Observes
the agony pensioners are subjected to, in the country and commends government
for instituting a probe panel into the management of pension funds. It
therefore urges government to ensure that those involved in the scam are
appropriately sanctioned.

YABATECH OUTSHINES LAGOS
SCHOOLS….. WINS GOVT ENVIRONMENT AWARD
Apparently
living to its slogan, “Yaba the great, the first is still the best”,
Yaba College of Technology in the course of preserving the nature within its
academic environment has won the Lagos State 2012 Tree Planting Award for the
second time thereby outshining all institutions in the state.
The
award was presented to the College at the fourth anniversary of tree and
planting exercise tagged “Operation Green Lagos” by the Governor of Lagos
State, Babatunde Fashola, for being one of the tertiary institutions with the
best nurtured trees supporting the Lagos State government in actualizing the
objectives of its operation Green Lagos.
The
Rector, Margaret Kudirat Ladipo in her address, said Yabatech share the passion
of the Lagos State Government on tree planting project, as they acknowledge the
benefits inherent in tree planting which includes provision of shades, air environment,
desert encroachment and erosion as well as reduction of noise and light glares
amongst others.
According
to her, “we maintained this passion all
the year round in Yaba College of Technology as we continue to nurture the
trees planted, everyday of the year. So to us, July 14 represents the
commencement of another cycle in the everyday process of preserving our
environment.”
She
lamented the level of assault on Nigerian environment through indiscriminate
ways trees are being pulled down without replacement which exposes the
environments to inherent dangers.
She
urged Nigerians to keep the lands very green and safe by planting trees for the
sustenance of a green environment that portrays a sense of orderliness and
serenity which could be likened to the provision of essential urban
infrastructure; she averred.
In
his keynote address, the Executive Gov. of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola
said it is not enough to plant trees but importantly preserve the existing ones
from those who wish to cut them for any reason.
He
said “as much as development is
desirable, expansion is inevitable, the development we crave for, is not a
sufficient reason for us to jeopardize our present and the expectation of posterity.
A meaningful development must have the green content for sustainability”.
The
Honourable Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, who was
represented by the Assistance Chief Scientific Officer, Mr. Olasunkanmi Sojimu
said trees create vital habitat and promote biodiversity in that abundant
forest do not just enhance lives but they save lives.
He
Commended Yaba College of Technology on its belief in this laudable project of
Lagos State.
Dr.
Ladipo commended the entire College Community giving kudos to the Environmental
Management and Beautification Committee of the College for a job well done.

Rector reiterates commitment to staff development at School of Technology 3rd Annual Lecture.
|
Rector reiterates
commitment to staff development at School of Technology 3rd Annual
Lecture.
The Rector Yaba College of Technology Dr. (Mrs.)
Kudirat Ladipo has reiterated the management’s commitment to improving staff
development.
The rector made this disclosure at the School of
Technology’s Third Annual Lecture series entitled ‘’The Impact of Technology on
Economic Growth: Implementation of Academic Curricular’’.
Dr. Ladipo revealed that “one of the ways by which the
polytechnic can perform effectively and remain relevant in the global arena in
contemporary times is by bravely exploring the frontiers of knowledge through
the institution of lecture series, workshops, conferences and seminars in
engaging areas of discourse such as today’s topic; and on a regular basis.”
The rector posited that the promotion of flexible
skills in teaching methodology would go a long way in expanding competency
towards better positioning for productivity in a keenly competitive
environment. According to her, ‘’In Yaba College of Technology we are very
proactive in this area. Indeed in the past two years, not less than five
hundred staff have benefitted from academic excursions such as this at
different form and at no mean cost to the college.
On her part the commissioner for Education Lagos
state, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye who chaired the occasion said Lagos State
Government under the administration of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has
embarked on programmes that will enhance technology base in its educational system,
intimating that centres have been created across the state in pursuance of achieving
Millennium Development Goals in Education. She commends the organisers of the
lecture series and appeal that the series be sustained.
Delivering the lecture, the Dean of the college of
Food Sciences, Bells University of Technology, Ota, Professor Olugbenga
Ogunmoyela called on federal government to effect radical reforms in the
nation’s education curricular to enhance the creative potentials of Nigeria and
its people. The don believes that a collaborative effort in manpower planning
with industry input into curricular reviews was capable of spearheading the
production of graduates whose training and knowledge are relevant to the needs
of the community.
‘’A new radical approach is required. Hence with the
political will, commitment and genuine transformational spirit to pursue the
right education curricula, policies, strategies and partnership, we can unleash
the creative potentials of our people, ‘’he said.
Emphasising the place of technological innovators on
economic growth, Ogunmoyela said focus on research for development has shifted
from classroom to the public arena where the needs of customers can be
identified and produced for consumption.
‘’This means that technology has become a highly
public enterprise and we now know better than to attempt to limit the frontiers
of knowledge in a technologically driven generation, and in a world where
traditional barriers of access to information have been broken’’, he
submitted.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Dean School of
Technology, Yabatech, Mr. J. O. Adigun said that it is imperative to know that
this year’s lecture title was carefully selected as an integration of the
department strategic objective on Millennium Development Goals in education.

Rector speaks at family meeting
|
Our goal is to strengthen Unity and tolerance – Ladipo
Dr. (Mrs.) Margert Kudirat Ibiyeye Ladipo the rector, Yaba College of Technology has said one of her cardinal goals since assuming the post of chief executive of the institution is to promote unity, cohesion and mutual understanding among the members of the institution’s community as a means of creating a conducive atmosphere for transformational growth. The challenge before any serious administration she said must be how to lift the standard of education which had been her priority in the last two years.
This was revealed at the interactive family meeting between the management and members of staff of Yaba College of Technology recently. She declared that her stage of administration has always maintained an open door policy.
According to her, “within the last two years we have voted huge resources for staff development. This is in line with our firm belief that regular training improves the individual’s knowledge base. I am happy to note that many of our staff are presently studying for their masters and PhD degrees. This has been yielding a positive results as the number of staff with PhD has increased impressively in the last two year ‘’I want to assure the staff that management will continue to encourage them to succeed in this endeavour.
To foster staff and students welfare the rector stated that the continuing challenges of office and classroom constraints will soon be a thing of the past in that before end of the first quarter of this year, the 7 storey building and school of science building constructed through TETFUND intervention would be commissioned for use by staff and students.
These are in addition to the CED building Foundry building of the school of Engineering and the security office already commissioned for the same propose; she added.
Also speaking further, Ladipo said that plans are in the pipeline to construct a 1,300 capacity auditorium and a complex for School of Technology. The 1,300 capacity auditorium when completed will house a gallery’s and a 4 floor building for staff offices with studios and classrooms attached to it.
Rehabilitation of the students hostels has also been completed for students convenience and to enhance their academic and social well being in the college.
The rector also revealed that the Academic Planning Unit (APU) was set up in line with management decision to reposition academic activities in the college.
The role of the academic planning unit in any institution is key to the development of academic programmes, she ascerted. The rector informed staff that an Anti-corruption & Transparency unit had been set up in line with the Federal government directive.
The unit, the rector said, is expected amongst other things to identify and curb corrupt practices and procedures. It will also receive and investigate complaints of corruption from the college community and carry out enlightenment campaigns for staff
She solicited for the support of every staff on the up-coming accreditation exercise to ensure that all programmes scale the accreditation hurdle. |

Rector Warns Students on 75 Percent Class Attendance
|
Rector Warns Students on 75 Percent Class Attendance
The management of Yaba College of Technology has warned the new intake of the college on the attainment of 75 percent class attendance in a semester as parameter that qualifies students to seat for any examination in the college.
The warning was given by the Rector of the college, Dr.(Mrs) Kudirat Ibiyeye-Ladipo at the 2011/2012 academic session matriculation ceremony held at the institution’s Sports Complex.
The caution, she said , was to disabuse the minds of all students that class attendance at lectures is not essential; adding that it is a must that students attend 75 percent of all lectures in order to qualify to write the examinations at the end of the semester.
Dr. Ibiyeye-Ladipo stated in clear terms that the students are required to obey college rules and regulations, dress properly and demonstrate exemplary behaviour at all times and on no account should any student or group of students take the law into their hands.
The rector emphasized the laid down procedures and effective channels of communication for taking care of their grievances through their elected Student Union executives, the office of the Dean Students’ Affairs, class advisers, heads of department and deans of school.
“The college has a high reputation of zero tolerance for all forms of anti-social behaviour and indecent dressing”; she stressed.
Dr. Ibiyeye-Ladipo, however, lamented that only about four thousand new intakes were being matriculated out of 106,000 candidates that applied to the college and implored the successful candidates to count themselves lucky and not misuse the rare opportunity.
She stated that concerted efforts was being made to improve the college carrying capacity through the construction of more structures for lectures in 2012 that will provide additional sitting space of not less than two thousand five hundred in line with the federal government’s direction of improving access to education.
‘One of the proposed structures is a lecture auditorium with a sitting capacity of one thousand three hundred which is to be provided this year through TETFUND special intervention. Approval was received from the immediate past college Council in 2011 for the conversion of a 500 – lecture theatre single floor project to a four-floor project to provide additional office, classroom and laboratory accommodation towards improving carrying capacity’; the rector revealed.
Dr. Ibiyeye-Ladipo, therefore, urged the new students to make the best use of the golden opportunity presented to them through their admission, stating that they were indeed privileged to have been admitted after the keen competition through JAMB and the rigorous post-JAMB screening by the college.
She also appealed to them to remain focused and make a success of their stay in the college. |

RECTOR'S SPEECH DURING YABATECH 27TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY
|
Rector's Speech

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you today to this 27th Convocation Ceremony of Yaba College of Technology, the cradle of Higher Education in Nigeria.
I am humbled by the array of distinguished personalities who have honoured our invitation to this occasion. I am grateful to you all for this rare privilege.
Honourable Minister, for the purpose of record, at this occasion, please permit me to recall that Yaba College of Technology was established in 1947 as the Yaba Technical Institute. The Technical Institute transformed to Yaba College of Technology in 1963 in re-positioning for the dynamic role it was to play in the technological and socio-economic development of Nigeria. The college then began with about 8 artisan courses and 423 trainees on these same grounds. The college now runs over seventy academic programmes in forty-one academic departments and eight schools including the new School of Technical Education which is run in affiliation with the University of Nigeria Nsukka. The student population now is about 16,000. The history of the institution is indeed synonymous with the history of higher education in Nigeria. Over the past 60 years the college has been producing high and middle level manpower for the development of the nation’s economy. Today’s occasion marks yet another milestone in the historical development of the college. Click to read...

|

I am delighted to be here today, at this 27th Convocation Ceremony of Yaba College of Technology; an institution which is indeed a national heritage. It is germane to recall today again that the seed of tertiary education in Nigeria was first planted here some sixty four years ago.
This cradle of tertiary education in Nigeria has continued to produce academically sound, morally balanced and professionally qualified personnel relevant to the industrial emancipation of Nigeria. Most of these products have been found to be proficiently competent and relevant to both the public and private sector as relevant knowledge workers with specialized skills.
It gladdens my heart to note that the entrepreneurship education which was pioneered by the college as a compulsory course has continued to stimulate the acquisition of productive and managerial skills for self-actualisation. Through this programme, the products of the college are encouraged to become job creators and not job seekers. This is certainly in tandem with the achievement of one of the Millenium Development goals of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger through productivity and economic empowerment.
It is pertinent that we seize the benefit of this occasion to reflect on our commitment to the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers who mid-wifed the vision of 1947 with the establishment of this institution as the cradle of higher learning in Nigeria, and ascertain how far we have gone. In the pursuance of this administration’s effort to actualize vision 20-2020, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan unveiled the Presidential Transformation Agenda for 2011 – 2015. This was released at the one-day retreat for functional and executive management personnel in the Federal Ministry of Education, in July 2011. click to read more..

WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY DR. MARGARET KUDIRAT LADIPO, RECTOR, YABATECH TO THE COHEADS OF POLYTECHNICS
|
WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED
BY
DR. MARGARET KUDIRAT LADIPO, RECTOR, YABA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, YABA
TO THE COUNCIL OF HEADS OF POLYTECHNICS AND COLLEGES OF TECHNOLOGY IN NIGERIA (COHEADS) DURING ITS MEETING
HELD AT YABA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, YABA ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2011
PROTOCOLS
On behalf of the governing council, management, staff and students I welcome you all to Yaba College of Technology, the cradle of higher education in Nigeria.
I am indeed delighted to play host to my distinguished colleagues from across the country at this 123rd regular meeting of the Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COHEADS).
The last time Yaba College of Technology hosted COHEADS was about 15 years ago. It is therefore a rare privilege for me to have the opportunity to host the Council just two years into my tenure of office.
Chairman Sir, distinguished colleagues, at an occasion such as this, it is customary that I tell you a little bit about your host institution; Yaba College of Technology.
The history of Yaba College of Technology is indeed synonymous with the history of higher education in Nigeria. The journey started in 1934 with the establishment of Yaba Higher College to provide final stage training, leading to the production of assistants in the medical and engineering fields and some other vocations. In 1945, the Elliot Commission on higher education in West Africa recommended the conversion of Yaba Higher College into a Technical Institute. Following the acceptance of the commission’s report by the government, Yaba Higher College was closed down, and in its place, Yaba Technical Institute was established in 1947. The students of
the higher college were transferred to Ibadan to become the pioneer students of the University College which took off in 1948. Thus, Yaba technical institute, Nigeria’s first higher education institution, charged with the responsibility of providing higher level skills, commenced in the 1947/48 session. In September 1963, the Yaba Technical Institute was renamed Yaba College of Technology by the Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, the then Governor-General of Nigeria.
For over 60 years, the college has maintained very high standards, and this has served as a platform for its growth and development. These standards are founded on its vision, mission, objectives and core values which have indeed become well rooted in its abiding traditions and culture.
Yaba College of Technology is structured into 8 Schools and 34 academic departments with a total of about 64 accredited programmes. The college also runs degree courses and Post Graduate Diploma in Engineering, in collaboration with University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Federal University of Technology, Akure respectively.
The college has a second campus at Epe. This is a 55-hectare parcel of land donated to the college by the Lagos State government about 20 years ago. The Department of Agricultural Technology is located at the campus.
We are privileged to welcome you to the center of excellence at a time when the polytechnics are taking the front burner in the promotion of entrepreneurship education as a major step towards the reduction of the legion of unemployed in our society.
Perhaps I should mention that Yaba College of Technology was the first higher institution in Nigeria to establish a full-fledged Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, with strong linkages with the world of commerce and industry. The
centre was established about 8 years ago and offers compulsory courses which must be taken by all students throughout their stay in the college. The rich content of the programme has significantly stimulated entrepreneurial interest in our products.
It is instructive to note that our students eagerly embrace the entrepreneurship curriculum. This is evident in the quality of the goods produced and the strategic marketing techniques employed by the students to dispose their products.
The twin resultant effects of this development are:
1) The development of innovative and creative production skills in the students towards the promotion of homemade goods.
2) The discovery of future job creators who will assist in the growth and development of our economy.
My fellow Rectors, let us brace-up to the challenge of making a meaningful impact on the nation’s drive to the actualization of vision 20-2020. We can achieve this by encouraging scholarship among the staff and students and establishing academic fellowships with established institutions and research centers across the globe. Similarly, our students should be encouraged to aspire for academic excellence by adequately rewarding outstanding performance. They can also be more creative and innovative through the sponsorship of their entrepreneurial initiatives by corporate bodies.

My distinguished colleagues, as we confront the challenges of the 21st century, I want to assure you that Yaba College of Technology is well positioned to provide compency based, entrepreneurial education for the production of graduates relevant to the needs of the economy and the technological development of our nation.
Yaba College of Technology is known for its traditional hospitality. We have a few events lined up to make your stay memorable, part of which are courtesy visits to the Oba of Lagos and the Oniru of Iru land. We shall also visit a few development projects in the college. Unfortunately time will not permit us to visit the Epe campus which is indeed the future of Yaba College of Technology. A cocktail party has also been arranged for the evening of Thursday, 22nd at the college hall.
As we converge at the Center of Excellence where the history of tertiary education in Nigeria is domiciled, may we have a rewarding interactive session. It is my prayer that our efforts would impact significantly in reshaping the face of technical education in Nigeria in our quest for technological and industrial emancipation as a nation.
I thank you all for listening and wish you a pleasant stay at Yaba College of Technology, the cradle of higher learning in Nigeria. I invite you also to enjoy the warmth and vibrancy of Lagos, the centre of excellence.
Once again I welcome you.
Thank you and God bless.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 123RD REGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF HEADS
|
COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 123RD REGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF HEADS OF POLYTECHNICS AND COLLEGES OF TECHNOLOGY (COHEADS) HELD AT THE YABA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, YABA, LAGOS, 20TH TO 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2011
COHEADS held its 123 rd meeting at Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos from Tuesday, 20th to Friday, 23rd September, 2011 in the Academic Board Room. A total of forty (40) Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology participated. The meeting was preceded by a colourful Opening Ceremony and a visit to Oba Abiodun Idowu Oniru, the Oniru of Iruland, Lagos.
After an exhaustive deliberation, the following resolutions were reached:
i. COHEADS resolved that the National Assembly should quickly pass into law the bill on Retirement Age of Lecturers in Tertiary Institutions.
ii. COHEADS also resolved that the National Board for Technical Education should advise all Polytechnic Proprietors especially State Governments to ensure that there is parity in the remuneration of all staff of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology to avert a situation where quality staff in the State Polytechnics drift towards the Federal Polytechnics.
iii. COHEADS observes that there are two or more factions of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and regrets the trend. It appeals to all the factions to resolve their differences for one indissoluble National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS).
